Belt exam are an important aspect of Taekwon-Do training. They indicate the student’s proficiency in that art, and allow further learning to take place. They are the tool used to determine taekwondo belt advancement.
ATSA BELT EXAM & RANKING:
At ATSA, we do not rush belt promotions. Our approach is different because we want students to truly earn their belts with skill and confidence, not just by attending classes or waiting for time to pass.
Every student must:
Achieve the required attendance.
Show mastery of techniques for their level.
Display discipline, confidence, and readiness as assessed by their instructors.
This process may take longer than in some places, but it ensures that when a student wears a new belt, it is a genuine symbol of their hard work, growth, and real ability. This is why ATSA graduates are consistently strong, disciplined, and confident in both Taekwondo and life.
RANKING SYSTEM
There are 10 grades between first starting Taekwondo and achieving black belt (1st Dan). These Levels are known as Kup Grades. You Work from 10th Kup (white belt) to 1st Kup (red belt with black tag), 1st Kup being the highest before Black belt. There are five colored belts and then black belt. In between each full colored belt there are colored tags. Each Belt signifies the knowledge and understanding of the taekwondo.
ATSA BELT EXAM STRUCTURE
Tae Kwon Do consists of a series of Grades which are known as Kup and Dan. Kup grades are marked with belts and tags, a different colour for each one. You make your way through these coloured belts before reaching the black belt. This should take around three and half to four years with hard training. .

When will I receive an invitation for the exam?
Starting in 2025, all belt exams will be held exclusively during the first quarter—January, February, and March. This once-a-year schedule allows students ample time to refine their skills and prepare for the year ahead, which will feature more events and activities to showcase their progress.
For students attending more than two classes per week, an additional mid-year exam in July will be available. This exclusive opportunity is designed for those who demonstrate exceptional growth and commitment. We encourage all students to begin preparing early to achieve their best results in this structured, focused approach to skill development.
Why haven’t I received an invitation for the exam?
At ATSA, we uphold high standards for belt exams. While we understand that students are eager to advance, eligibility is based on both attendance and syllabus completion. This ensures that every student has the necessary skills and knowledge to progress successfully.
If you have not yet received an invitation, we encourage you to continue attending classes regularly and practicing the techniques outlined in our syllabus. Consistency and dedication are key to meeting the exam requirements.
My child has been attending classes regularly. Why haven’t they received an invitation for the exam?
ATSA belt exams are based on multiple factors, including attendance, skill level, and in-class performance. Our instructors carefully evaluate each student before extending an invitation to ensure they are fully prepared to demonstrate the required techniques.
We encourage you to continue supporting your child’s training by ensuring consistent attendance and additional practice at home. Once they are ready, they will be invited to participate in the belt exam.
Can I reject the exam invitation?
Yes, you can choose to reject the exam invitation. Once you receive the invitation, you will be able to review the exam details, including the date and exam content. If the schedule or requirements are not suitable for you, you may decline the invitation. However, we encourage students to consult with their instructors before making a decision.
Is passing the belt exam guaranteed?
Your exam result depends entirely on your performance on the test day. There are three possible outcomes:
No Promotion: If performance does not meet the required standard, the student will remain at their current level.
Single Promotion: If performance meets expectations, the student will be promoted by one rank.
Double Promotion: In rare cases, students who perform exceptionally well may receive a double promotion, advancing by two ranks.
